New name, same us: City Central + IWCN

We wanted to give you all a head’s up about some pretty big changes that will be coming to City Central in the next few months – and to reassure you that most things will be staying exactly the same.

Starting soon, our Instagram name will be changing from @citycentralgroningen to @citycentral.iwcn. Why are we making this change? Because City Central is working more closely together with two wonderful organizations in the north focused on helping internationals feel at home: Connect International and International Welcome Center North (IWCN).

All of our new colleagues at Connect and IWCN are just as committed as we are to helping internationals feel at home, to enabling them tap into all that this special region has to offer, and empowering them give back and get involved in their new community.

If you’re not familiar with them, here’s some more info about our partners:

Connect International
has been providing for the social and community needs of internationals in the northern provinces of Groningen, Drenthe and Friesland for decades, and IWCN, which handles the formalities of moving and getting settled in the region, just celebrated their 7th anniversary.

Since January of 2022, we’ve been coordinating our projects like My Local Friend, FietsFriend, and Welcome Walks from our new office space at the International Welcome Center North (Gedempte Zuiderdiep 98). Many of you have already found us here over the past few months for your intakes for My Local Friend.

Our goal in this collaboration is to make it easier for newcomers in the northern Netherlands to find the one-stop-shop for all of their personal, professional and social needs.

So, what does all that mean?

Beyond a new name, we’ll be expanding our focus beyond just what’s happening in Groningen. Starting soon, we’ll also be sharing tips and recommendations for all the coolest places and events in Friesland and Drenthe.

But don’t worry! Our projects – FietsFriend, My Local Friend, Welcome Walks, and other special social/cultural activities – won’t be going anywhere. And the rest of what we do – our Tuesday takeovers, tips, event recommendations and the online community we’ve created together – will remain exactly the same.

No matter what other changes may come along, one thing will remain the same: we’ll be here to provide international residents with all of the guidance, social connections, and support they want and deserve.
